“Mallows”

This work painted in the 1930's was formely in the Collection of Lady Churchill.

The 1959 exhibition was only the fifth retrospective of a living artist to be held at the Royal Academy. This painting was one of the Sixty-one paintings shown in the Diploma Gallery; thirty-five had recently returned from a tour in America and the others were chosen from the Chartwell collection. London art critic John London commented, ‘Everybody seemed bowled over by those bright, strong, confident pictures…’

Churchill: The Painter

Churchill's talent was multi-facetted, he was a soldier, politician, wartime leader, writer and historian. In 1915, at the age of 41 Churchill discovered a natural talent as an artist and for the rest of his life he painted enthusiastically. His art embraced many subjects and locations in Britain and around the world. Churchill painted over 500 canvases predominantly of landscapes, but also still lifes and self portraits.
